Why Doesnt LinkedIn Have Any Serious Competitors With millions of highly skilled employees on LinkedIn, the professional networking site is an essential tool for corporate and agency recruiters alike. The ‘serious network’ has been the dominant player since it first launched in 2003 and no new platforms have seriously challenged its market position. The world’s largest professional social network has over 467 million users worldwide, including 133 million in the United States. For individuals, it’s a place to network, for recruiters it’s a platform to post jobs and source talent. LinkedIn today remains the ultimate tool for anyone looking to make professional connections or find employment. Cornering the market LinkedIn hasn’t become the “Facebook for business” by accident. The network was first launched by founder Reid Hoffman on May 5, 2003. Within one month it had 4,500 users. Today, they have 467 million users and no serious English language challengers. LinkedIn was successful early on at driving high quality professionals to their site. Hoffman deliberately seeded the product with power users, as he knew that creating an aspirational brand was key to going mainstream. The network would have failed if there hadn’t been a major adoption of influencers in 2003. LinkedIn also crucially deployed an Outlook style contact uploader to allow it to go viral. By doing so they managed to increase their user base far quicker than any competitor. Even today, no other brand has invested in this area despite the distribution benefits you get from Outlook compared to webmail. Empire building During its formative years, LinkedIn deferred any content related revenue or engagement strategy until its growth path was established. Despite substantially increasing its B2C content output since then, most employees consider LinkedIn a low maintenance network. It doesn’t require constant engagement or day-to-day management. Most LinkedIn’s users have no tangible need to register anywhere else. The account creation process is lengthy and once completed, the average LinkedIn user has little incentive to job hunt on smaller platforms. As LinkedIn grows, more people use the exact same platform, and using any other professional networking website becomes less attractive. Where’s the competition? From being the first major online CV directory to becoming a content powerhouse for recruitment, B2B  sales, marketing, and lead generation. LinkedIn is now established in more than 200 countries, receives 100 million unique visitors a month and currently up to 60% of US companies use it to hire staff. That’s a phenomenal market share by anyone’s standards. Indeed, there doesn’t appear to be any successful English speaking business networks other than LinkedIn. Future challengers? LinkedIn could face serious competition from Workplace by Facebook (previously  Facebook at Work), which launched in October 2016, and millennial focused entrants such as Jobr and Debut. While European companies such as Xing (Germany) and Viadeo (France), are too small to rival their 467 million user base, Workplace by Facebook  has the brand power to challenge LinkedIn. Workplace by Facebook lets you create a work account that is separate from your personal Facebook account, says Facebook. With a Workplace  account, you can use Facebook tools to interact with co-workers. Things you share using your work account will only be visible to other people at your company. Facebook has the global popularity to attract millions of professionals, despite being banned at several workplaces. The professional version is separate from the social network, and if successful, it might be easier for them to challenge LinkedIn, than some of their European competitors. However, it doesn’t appear to be a traditional market challenge as Facebook is targeting team building within an organisation, while LinkedIn remains a medium for users, recruiters and organisations/industries. Facebook at Work is more likely to disrupt team building apps such as Slack and Yammer than LinkedIn’s global network. Is  LinkedIn unstoppable? Microsoft successfully  closed its $26 billion deal for LinkedIn in December 2016, making it the largest acquisition in the tech company’s history. Bolstering their respective markets, LinkedIn will be looking to accelerate their growth by integrating Microsoft’s premiere features (Microsoft Outlook and Office 365). Having cornered the business market early doors, LinkedIn began as a frontier product and only fragmentation and niche competitors can threaten their long-term position as the world’s leading business-network site. Will it last forever? Unlikely, but for the foreseeable future it remains an essential tool for recruiters and employees. Like all successful empires, LinkedIns biggest competition is probably themselves.

In the past, tried everything but kept feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and hopeless. In the midst of anxiety and bouts of depression, I kept changing jobs, moving locationsyet nothing seemed to work. Heres what happened at one of my lowest points in life Broke up with a guy that I was set on marryingended my work contract a year early because I couldnt stand the jobunfortunately, the list goes on. When it rains, it pours right?! Ugh! But, while life was falling apart, I was able to manifest milestone breakthroughs like crazy! Life was chaotic but that didnt mean I had to stay at rock bottom. I tapped into my intuition to gain clarity and thrived in the silver linings of all the challenges. How? Incorporating daily meditation into my mornings and energy work. So, how can you start meditating to improve your life? With a busy schedule and a busier mind, taking the time to meditate may be tricky. However, five minutes of practice can be as effective as an hour. The sincerity of the effort matters far more than elapsed time since meditation is about stepping out of minutes and hours and into moments. 1.  Start Small So if you can only manage one minute of mindfulness, that is great! It means you have already remembered the value to stopping and shifting even momentarily from doing to being. 2. Try Walking Now, meditating does not mean you have to sit still. Walking meditations are just as beneficial! So go out in nature and just be. No music, no iPhone. Just be. 3. Dont Worry If your Mind Wanders Also, meditating does not mean you have to somehow make your mind blank. If your mind wanders, that’s natural. All you have to do is bring the attention back to your breath each time. 4. Make It a Habit Meditation, among many other types of energy work, certainly helps with focus and improving intuitive abilities. The more you practice meditating, the easier it becomes to hear your inner voice, your intuition. May your days be balanced with relaxing and renewing activities!

How a Game Designer’s Interview Blunder Led Him to Conquer the World I can’t believe I just said that… I’d be interested to see statistics on what percentage of job interviewees have suffered such a thought. And I wonder how often the interviewer even noticed or was bothered by the interviewer’s supposed gaff. Twenty-two years ago, a young Tim Schafer made a big gaff…and the interviewer certainly noticed. But after some creative thinking, he landed the job. Today, he’s a computer game industry icon. Check out these excerpts from his fantastic blog (where you can even see copies of his rejection letters for even more inspiration!): My job hunt was getting kind of depressing. I was building up a pile of rejection letters, most of them from jobs I didn’t even want. But then, one bright summer day, I walked into the campus career center and saw this. That’s the original posting for the “Assistant Designer / Programmer” position at Lucasfilm, Games Division. I called David Fox right away and scribbled all the notes you see while I was talking to him. I told him how much I wanted to work at Lucasfilm, not because of Star Wars, but because I loved, “Ball Blaster.” “Ball Blaster, eh?” he said. “Yeah! I love Ball Blaster!” I said. It was true. I had broken a joystick playing that game on my Atari 800. “Well, the name of the game is Ball Blazer.” Mr. Fox said, curtly. “It was only called Ball Blaster in the pirated version.” Gulp. Totally busted. It was trueâ€"I had played the pirated version. There, I said it… The rest of the phone call didn’t go much better. But at the end of it, David told me to send in my resume, along with a cover letter describing my ideal job. Since I figured I had blown the interview, I had nothing to lose. So I did my cover letter in the form of a semi-graphic adventure. It worked. What we can learn from Tim’s application: 1) Know how to sell your strengths: Tim could easily have penned a typical cover letter, but his creativity wouldn’t nearly have been apparent. Granted, the traditional cover email/CV combination is more appropriate for the vast majority of positions. But candidates must still use these mediums to demonstrate their skills and capabilities. That’s why we’ve given candidates the option to attach multi-media work samples to their Innovate CV. After all, sometimes a candidate needs to go beyond ‘telling’ and start ‘showing’ in order to stand out. 2. Exclusive applications: I’d be willing to bet that Lucas Films were more taken aback by Tim’s sincerity than by his creativity. After all, this wasn’t merely a creative application that Lucas Arts had received…along with a hundred other companies. Tim’s application was designed and created exclusively for them! Imagine that. Hiring staff can tell immediately tell when they’re receiving a generic CV (as good as it may be) versus a customised CV. The tailored approach takes into account the industry, organisation, and position. When candidates respectively make the effort to personalise an application, they present themselves as a far more professional and thoughtful. Play with the rules: Lucas Film’s asked Tim to submit ‘a cover letter describing [his] ideal job.’ Tim understood that they likely wanted to ascertain his writing skills and creativity. So with that in mind, he took a risk, and took a different route. Hiring managers want the best, and unless the organisation is stuck in her procedure, they don’t mind if candidates break the rules to stand out. Read between the lines to determine where you have space to try something different. But of course, know your limits. Common sense applies. 4. Be proactive, even if when it hurts: Tim’s job hunt wasn’t going well, yet he persisted. His proactive visit to a campus career centre led him to his dream opportunity. Job hunting is emotionally exhausting. When the lousy jobs even seem out of reach, it’s easy to give up on one’s dreams. There’s a world of gamers out there who are forever grateful that Tim didn’t do just that, no matter how tempting the option may have been. 5. Interviews aren’t everything: Despite a lousy interview, Tim’s fantastic follow-up won him the position. One strike doesn’t mean you’re out. Candidates who struggle in an interview can confidently bounce back. Take stock of what went wrong and remedy the issues with a thoughtfully worded follow-up email or letter. Well done, Tim.
